The Apple Watch Series 4 offers four new animated watch faces that the manufacturer apparently did not generate on the computer. You can see how they were made in the video above this article.

Instead of relying on computer-generated CGI animations, Apple used video recordings for the "Fire", "Water", "Liquid Metal" and "Vapor" watch faces. A vertical camera setup was used for this, as well as a large frame that was supposed to simulate the display edges of the Apple Watch Series 4. Within the frame, the team would then ignite fire or squirt water and record it to create the four watch faces mentioned.

Not all ideas make it onto the Apple Watch

Speaking about the video, Apple's vice president of UI design Alan Dye told website Cool Hunting: "It's more of a story about our design team. We could have done it digitally, but we ended up recording everything in a studio." When asked how Apple decides on specific watch face designs, Dye explained, "For our design in general, for every thing we do, there's probably 100 more we don't do, and that's easy Part of the design process."

The Apple Watch Series 4 will go on sale on September 21, 2018. Compared to the predecessor, one of the improvements is a larger display, on which the dials should come into their own. The Apple Watch Series 4 can also record an ECG, but the feature will not be available at launch
